Apr 07, 2014

Peking University, Mar. 22, 2014: Nearly a year after its nominal establishment, the Sleep Medicine Center at PKU Health Science Center was finally inaugurated as a department of PKU Sixth Hospital.

The Center is aimed at all sorts of sleep disorders, whose total incidence in China sums up to 38.2%--significantly higher than the world average. Persistent sleep disorder might lead to cardiovascular and mental diseases, posing an increasingly serious health threat to contemporary human beings.

The Sixth Hospital has dispatched eight staff members to the Department, including four medical PhDs. The examining room is equipped with several polysomnography monitors, making it possible to detect primary insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and circadian rhythm abnormality. Patients would receive personalized treatments in an independent ward there.

The Hospital’s Director Lu Lin himself assumed the Department’s academic leader, appointing Professor Sun Hongqiang as the de facto head.

After the inauguration ceremony on March 19, the Center hosted an academic conference on sleep medicine, popularizing the knowledge of somnipathy to patients and their relatives.
