Peking University, Mar. 4, 2014: The paperPeking University People’s Hospital: An IT-Led Upgrading in the New Healthcare Reform(http://cb.hbsp.harvard.edu/cb/web/product_detail.seam;jsessionid=719E31337F7EDEC5AA569F560F82574D?E=4861547&R=TU0052-PDF-ENG&conversationId=837350) was released on Harvard Business Publishing (http://hbsp.harvard.edu )recently as a recommended case study in business courses for MBA students at Harvard. PKU People’s Hospital’s practice is regarded as a successful case in the contemporary healthcare reform among public hospitals in China.

Since Dr. Wang Shan was appointed the president of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) in 2006, there has seen a significant increase of the annual revenues and profits in this 3A public hospital in China thanks to an IT-led management reform launched by Dr. Wang. In the meantime, the quality of healthcare and medical service has largely improved together with the efficiency of management. The fact drew the attention of China Business Case Center of Tsinghua University and its co-director, the former vice dean of Harvard Business School, F. Warren McFarlan, who paid a special visit to Dr. Wang for an interview and wrote a case study over the hospital’s reform practice with his fellow team.

According to Dr. Wang, the IT management of PKU People’s Hospital has established itself in the world over recent years. With an upgrade from Stage 4 award to Stage 6 award honored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSShttp://www.himssconference.org), the hospital has stepped into one of the top hospitals in the world in terms of the information system. The IT-led reform has brought an entirely digitalized management that covers 31 core systems, 204 sub-systems and5 major domains including information exchange, clinical information, executive management, sectional healthcare and basic framework.

PKUPH is now taking the lead in information reform among domestic public hospitals, focusing on Delivery System, Hospital Resource Planning, etc.

The recommended case studies in MBA courses of Harvard Business School shall go through strict and careful selections and only a few can be adopted, said Zhang Hong, the vice director of China Business Case Center, Tsinghua University. The landing of PKU hospital’s case has proved the sound quality of its information reform, which is a worthy reference in business courses both at home and overseas.
