As relief work concludes, congrats, concerns voiced
May 17, 2013

Peking University, May 14, 2013: “The devotion of all the medical workers deserves our applause and respect. They did not only save lives, but were also bringing love, hope, and fortitude. It is always the values, emotions, and good will of people that go directly to the heart.”

Speaking at a summing-up meeting, Peking University Council Chairman Zhu Shanlu praised the PKU (Beida) medical relief team’s work at quake-hit area.

“Healing the wounded and rescuing the dying, Beida spirits were well manifested as in close connection with the nation and the people,” said Professor Zhu at the Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) meeting on May 10.

A PKU relief team set out only 13 hours after a 7.0-magnitude quake struck the Ya’an region in southwest China's Sichuan Province on the morning of April 20. At midnight, the first medical team of 27 PUHSC experts in fields including orthopedics, neurosurgery, and general surgery arrived at the scene.

The PKU relief teams carried out such works as surgical operation and establishment of hospital wards to save lives and restore order at the area. They accomplished their mission and returned to Beijing on May 1.

To build Peking University into a world-class university, all Beida people need to work hard and make a contribution to the Beida dream. The spirit of PUHSC will act as an impetus to move forward the whole university’s development, Professor Zhu added.

Also at the meeting, Zheng Bo with the Peking University First Hospital voiced his concern that more work should be put into controlling hospital infection.

Li Weishi, member of the team and physician with the Peking University Third Hospital, addressed the importance of holding on to the positive energy inside everyone’s heart.

“The disaster-relief expedition again revealed the pragmatic mind-set and swift implementation capacity at PUHSC. Those respectable medical personnel showed their true colors when the country and people are in dire need,” Ke Yang, executive vice president of the university and of PUHSC, said at the meeting.
