Sino-US seminar on medical matters and mental health
Dec 04, 2012

Peking University, Nov. 30, 2012: A seminar on medical matters and mental health was held in Beijing earlier in November 2012.

Apart from the School of Public Health at Peking University (PKU), the joint hosts also included the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn SPP), the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong, and the Department of Social Work at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

On November 11, with over 160 attendees, the opening ceremony was presided by Professor Meng Qingyue, Dean of the School of Public Health at PKU.

First, Penn SPP Dean Richard J. Gelles introduced the American hospital system and medicare system, describing the role, responsibility and working pattern of American social workers.

Besides, scholars and social workers from Hong Kong also introduced the status quo of their corresponding framework.

Later on, Meng Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of the Division of Social Affairs of China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, delivered a lecture on the development and trend of social work in China. According to him, Chinese medical social workers — from different backgrounds — work in diverse medical social systems, including hospital volunteer groups and community hospitals. He also pointed out the problems of the current system.

This seminar improved the communication between Chinese and American circles of medical social work. By comparing the two countries' medical social practice, both gained new thinking on the improvement of their medical social work systems.

Previously on November 10, more than 30 specialists and scholars attended a foundation meeting of a professional master’s degree on medical social work. The establishment of such a degree will help equip medical social workers with sound knowledge and professional skills.
