Nobel Laureate John Byrne addresses PKU

Peking University, Nov. 20, 2012: Professor John Byrne, the Nobel Peace Laureate in 2007, gave a speech entitled “Energy Strategy for Urban Sustainable Development” on November 4 at Peking University (PKU), invited by Professor Chen Dongmin from the Institute for Industrial Technology at PKU.

 

 

With the help of data, Professor John Byrne expounded the relationship between the change of carbon dioxide emissions and the earth’s average temperature rise, as well as the consequential influence on parts of earth. Then he shared the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s research results about measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, stressing the efficiency of energy as the key to achieve the goal of reduction.

 

Byrne suggested that universities should lead a comprehensive energy-saving management system which integrates policy, financial, technical and other resources.

 

A round-table forum was held afterwards on topics like Sino-US energy strategy, university cooperation, new comprehensive energy-saving, which involved Professor Byrne and experts from the governmental, academic, industrial and financial institutions.
