Peking University, May 4, 2012: 20 undergraduate students who intend to take summer internship positions recently received the Undergraduate Practice Opportunity Scholarship (UPOS) offered by the College of Engineering, Peking University (PKU). Sponsors of the Scholarship Philip and Hsia Choong conferred the awards to them on the ceremony held on April 20.

The 20 undergraduates

UPOS was established in the College of Engineering in 2011, aiming to facilitate internships and practice activities of undergraduates in the 2nd or 3rd year. It is supported by the Hsia Sheo-Yu & Hwang Yu-Tseng Fund, a 100,000 USD endowment from Philip and Hsia Choong. Keen to the education cause at PKU, the couple has donated funds of over 700,000 USD. Among them, UPOS is a program targeted at internships.

Mr. Philip Choong is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an internationally renowned expert on space technology. His wife Mrs. Hsia Choong is also a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has 32 years’ working experience in Hewlett-Packard Company.

"I believe that internship is a very important means for the students to discover themselves and the outside world. It will help them shape a clearer idea of what career they want to take in the future." said Mr. Choong.

Yongmei Li, UPOS manager and director of the Office of Development in the College of Engineering, explained the implementation scheme of UPOS, “UPOS is carried out in three stages. Firstly, there is the initial scholarship of 1,500 yuan prior to the internship; secondly, a further stipend of 2,000 yuan is awarded to selected recipients with excellent performance in the actual internships; and last but not least, an extra 1,000 yuan is awarded to those who’d like to become tutors of the recipients of the subsequent year. We encourage them to pass on their experience.”

It was the second year of UPOS. In May of last year, 23 undergraduate students received the Scholarship and took various positions in that summer.
