Xie Xincheng: Physics and new materials
May 07, 2012

Peking University, May 4, 2012: The 38th Cai Zhai Lecture series was held on April 26th with Professor Xie Xincheng, dean of School of Physics and director of Quantum Material Research Center of Peking University, shedding light on issues of the history of human research on materials, connection between modern physics and material sciences, and the impact of the development of materials physics in our daily life.

Started with a brief definition of physics, the lecture unveiled the virtual connection between physics and material science, especially in the age of electro-information, the latter poses questions to the former while physics facilitates the application of material sciences in real life.

Specifically, Xie introduced such frontier issues in material physics as superconductive materials and topological insulators, and described zero-resistance phenomenon of superconductive materials, Meissner effect and the tunnel effect of quantum displaying the characteristics and superconductivity.

Later in the lecture, Xie indicated the irreplaceable functions of superconductivity and its close relations withbiomedicine, clinical medicine, marine science, information technology, energy and transportation. “There exsits an infinite room for development in materials physics, which needs to be filled by the devotion of our young students and scholars, I hope you will find it interesting and would like to jump in”, he said.
