Opening Ceremony of PKU UES Culture Festival: Geographical Knowledge Lecture

Peking University, April. 8, 2017: On March. 31, the opening ceremony of the Third PKU College of Urban and Environmental Science Culture Festival was held in R314, No.2 Teaching Building. Han Maoli, professor at the Institute of History and Geography, Wang Yufan, secretary of the university’s Youth League Committee, and Nie Yifei, deputy secretary of the Youth League Committee, attended the opening ceremony together. There were around 200 students and teachers participating in the event.


In order to attractteachers and students into the field of urban and environmental science, this year’s culture festival  achieved further innovations compared to culture festivals of the past, such as holding knowledge lectures, planting trees, and making miniatures of PKU.

During the opening ceremony, Wang Yufan introduced the history of UES and the subject of geography. She urged participants to fully cherish this chance to understand the history and experience the culture of the department.

After the opening ceremony, Professor Han Maoli delivered a speech named “The Tensile and Banding Forces of Geography -- Geographical Motivations behind History”. She explained the relevant concepts and employed vivid examples to illustrate the importance and influence of geography. The audiences all sank into deep thought after her speech.

When the lecture ended, students actively communicated with Professor Han about some interesting topics, such as the issue of theSouth China Sea, and the relationship between the opennessof countries and their geographical environments. In the end, representative of students presentedsouvenirs to Professor Han.
