Curtains of the 2014-2015 PKU Drama Talent Competition comes down

Peking University, May 30, 2015: The final of the 2014-2015 PKU “Peiwen Cup” Drama Talent Competition was held successfully at the New Tsinghua Auditorium on May 25, 2015 with Graduated when Passing from the International Drama Appreciating Theatre Group won the first prize.

The competition was directed by the Chinese Communist Youth League Peking University Committee and hosted by PKU Student Union. The first drama performance was an original play named Crazy Moon from the Serious Theatre Group. The play depicted how the patients in a lunatic asylum devoted themselves with unprecedented “normality” to the preparation and organization of a grand art performance of the hospital. Through the absurd story, Serious wants to express that courage and tolerance persist in modern society despite of dogma. “How should we live our lives? Am I a lunatic who yearns for the normal world or a normal man who longs for the crazy world?” Crazy Moon asks.

The next performer was the Shi Fang Chun Qiu Theatre Group, and their surreal drama was entitled Sword Questing. The story included a leaf boat, two people and 6789+1+1 swords. To pursue the “miracle” of “marking the moving boat to locate the lost sword”, Master Zhang and his servant rowed back and forth for over six-thousand times in two-thousand years. Various characters from the Warring States period to the Ming Dynasty then to the Republic of China were involved. Every audience has obtained their unique understanding of the theme of Sword Questing in the seemingly funny story.

Then, the Tom & Jerry Theatre Group performed their original costume drama The Rat & The Cat. The play was named after Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang, two swordsmen in the Northern Song Dynasty, whose nicknames were “the Royal Cat” and “the Furry Rat”. The vivid performance of all the players showed the audiences the fraudulence and the ties of friendship in the world of swordsmen and warriors in a turbulent time.

The International Drama Appreciating Theatre Group came to the stage as the last performer with their original campus drama, Graduated when Passing. The crew contains the largest number of performers in the history of the competition and they are all senior students from the School of International Studies, Peking University. The story was about the last class of their four-year campus life. If they could pass the course, they would be able to graduate. Meanwhile, after finishing the play Graduated when Passing, they would graduate. The play wants to say that whether there is regret or not, past campus life would never come back. Get rid of the sorrow and helplessness, and keep those wonderful old days in memory forever.

The judges commented that the four dramas had embodied different themes, profound meanings and great expertise. They were delighted about the development of the PKU campus drama and looked forward to the bright future of it.
At last, Graduated when Passing from The International Drama Appreciating Theatre Group won the first prize, and The Rat & The Cat from the Tom & Jerry Theatre Group won the second prize. Also, prizes including the Best Leading Actor, the Best Supporting Actor, the Best Leading Actress, the Best Supporting Actress, the Best Director, the Best Original Scenario and the Best Stage Effects went to these four plays.

The year 2015 witnesses the tenth anniversary of PKU Drama Talent Competition. As a brand activity of PKU, the Drama Talent Competition has been providing an important stage for the promotion of the drama culture of PKU and all the other universities in China. The successful end of the competition not only reveals the inheritance of the PKU spirit of drama in the previous ten years, but also symbolizes a starting point of the coming ten years.
