Two festivals, same day
Apr 06, 2015

Peking University, April 6, 2015: Qingming is an annual festival when Chinese honor the dead. However, in this year, there is something special about the festival--Easter and the Qingming festival falls on the exact same day in 2015! When Chinese Qingming festival meets with western Easter, what kind of wonderful chemical reaction will it produce?

The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day or Ching Ming, is a traditional Chinese festival on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. Qingming Festival is a time of many different activities, among which tomb sweeping, taking a spring outing, flying kites are the major ones. Some other lost customs like wearing willow branches on the head and riding on swings have added infinite joy in past days. The festival is a combination of sadness and happiness, perhaps bittersweet.

Easter, also called Pasch or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

In countries where Christianity is a state religion, or where the country has large Christian population, Easter is often a public holiday. As Easter is always a Sunday, many countries in the world also have Easter Monday as a public holiday. Some retail stores, shopping malls, and restaurants are closed on Easter Sunday. Good Friday, which occurs two days before Easter Sunday, is also a public holiday in many countries, as well as in 12 U.S. states. Even in states where Good Friday is not a holiday, many financial institutions, stock markets, and public schools are closed. Few banks that are normally open on regular Sundays are closed on Easter.

During the Qingming Festival holiday, many people would like to go out for a walk to have good relaxation and come closer to the beauty of nature. Despite the fact that many of us are heavily burdened and overloaded in our daily work, we can still find joy and appreciate the beautiful things if we keep our eyes and hearts open. In the campus, there are people taking photos, kids playing around, painters drawing pictures and countless other beautiful sceneries.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge,” said Albert Einstein. When we paint, we naturally develop our abilities to imagine and create things.

Edgar Parks Snow (17 July 1905 — 15 February 1972) was an American journalist known for his books and articles on Communism in China and the Chinese Communist revolution.
Qing Ming is a time to remember the dead and the dearly departed. More important, it is a period to honour and to pay respect to one's deceased ancestors and family members. Because it reinforces the ethic of filial piety.

Li Dazhao (October 29, 1888 — April 28, 1927) was a Chinese intellectual who co-founded the Communist Party of China with Chen Duxiu in 1921.As a leading intellectual in the New Culture Movement, Li was recruited by Cai Yuanpei to head the library at Peking University.

Cai Yuanpei (January 11, 1868 — March 5, 1940) was a Chinese educator, Esperantist, president of Peking University, and founder of the Academia Sinica. He was known for his critical evaluation of Chinese culture and synthesis of Chinese and Western thinking, including anarchism.
The major custom in Qingming Festival is tomb sweeping. According to folk religion, the spirits of deceased ancestors still live underground and look after the family; the tombs are said to be their houses; thus it is very important to keep the tombs clean.

The most beautiful thing when you hang around aimlessly is to meet with those which are unknown. And when you are in quest of something undiscovered, your mind would be refreshed so that you can feel the heartfelt happiness.

When Qingming festival meets with Easter, both eastern and western world join hands on the same day to reconfirm those basic values shared by the human race for centuries–about origin, belief, tradition, and all that can be called eternity. On the same day, we both pick up those long inherited values, take them into a deeper consideration through ancient rituals, and seek for a better path to a more harmonious status of mutual understanding, in every possible way, between races, genders, religions and all the other differences in humanity.
