Zhu Zhiqiang, president of PKU Library, introduced the origin of "World Reading Day", encouraging students to cherish the abundant reading resources available at school and enrich their knowledge accumulation along the way. Eleven students were awarded based on the number of the books they borrowed in the year 2011, among whom five were graduates and six were undergraduates. Professor Meng Man, a well-known scholar and researcher of the history of Sui and Tang Dynasties, gave a keynote speech with the theme "Beauty & Sadness of Females in Tang Dynasty". By unfolding the lives of females in Tang Dynasty, Meng provoked the audience to reflect the meaning of life and the social statue of current females.

"World Reading Day" aims at promoting reading habit around the world by annual holidays. This is the first time for PKU to hold relevant series against the background. Several events would take place next, including a book recommendation exhibition named "Reading for a Better Mood", "Subject Consultation Day", etc.
