Sociologist Fei Xiaotong was awarded the International Applied Anthropology Association's Malinowski Prize  on March 7, 1980.

 


Fei Xiaotong (1910-2005)


Fei Xiaotong (or Fei Hsiao-Tung) was a pioneering in Chinese researcher and served as professor of sociology and anthropology. He is also noted for his research into China's many ethnic groups as well as for his role as a social activist. His works on sociology and anthropology were pivotal both in laying a solid foundation for future development in sociological and anthropological studies in China, as well as in introducing social and cultural phenomena of China to the international community.


Before his death on April 24, 2005 in Beijing at the age of 94, Xiaotong was professor of Sociology at Peking University. A memorial has been set up in the Department of Sociology at the university, where he has taught from 1980s until his passing in 2005.
