Peking University, Beijing, May. 2, 2009: On the morning of April 29, Mr. Liu Qi, Secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, Mr. Guo Jinlong, Mayor of Beijing City, Mr. Wang Anshun, Vice-Secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, Mr. Li Shixiang, Secretary-General of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, Mr. Zhao Fengtong, secretary of Beijing Municipal Party Leadership Group, Mr. Gou Zhongwen, Vice Mayor of Beijing City, and other leaders of Beijing municipal government visited Peking University. The main theme of this visit was to change the mode of the economic development and to enhance abilities of scientific innovation and transforming technological achievements. Mr. Hao Ping, Vice Minister of Ministry of Education, Prof. Min Weifang, Secretary of CPC PKU Committee, Prof. Zhou Qifeng, President of PKU, and other school leaders accompanied.

Member of the Beijing Municipal Committee Touring the Main Campus

The Beijing Government leaders first listened to Prof. Zhou Qifeng’s report on the status of PKU’s development, constructing of the scientific innovation platform, the independent innovation mechanism, and transformation in technological achievements. Accompanied by school leaders, they visited the exhibition of PKU frontier technological achievements. Then, they learned more about: “New producing technology of high purity polycrystalline silicon for solar cell”, “PET/CT Molecular Medicine imaging equipment”, “Development and application of intelligent artificial limbs based on dynamic walking mechanism”, “PKU comprehensive platform for innovative drug research and development”, “3D digital technology and platform for intelligent transportation and the digital heritage”, “STYH satellite integrated services VSAT communications network”, “Using stem cells to treat diabetes”, “Automatic observing system on protein crystal”, “Recombinant RK5 dual-target anti-tumor gene engineering medicine”, “Generation of GaN-based semiconductor material and its related optoelectronic devices”, “Low-cost flexible organic photovoltaic devices”, “RF Superconducting Cavity”, “High-temperature superconducting quantum interference device”, “3D dynamic traffic data collection vehicle”, and “health mobile observation vehicle", all of which are original research achievements of PKU in recent years. Mr. Liu Qi and Mr. Guo Jinlong asked about details concerning these projects’ technology contents, application effects, production costs and market prospects while listening to the introduction. Subsequently, they visited the School of Life Sciences, Micro Processor Research and Development Center of PKU, and National Engineering Laboratory for Video Technology to learn more about “Early diagnosis of heart failure and gene therapy technology”, “Product research on chip with independent intellectual property”, and “AVS pull relevant industrial upgrading”.

Mr.Liu Qi and Mr. Guo Jinlong affirmed PKU’s technological achievements obtained through scientific independent innovation completely, and was full of hope for the cooperation between Beijing city and PKU to promote the industrialization of scientific achievements. Mr. Liu Qi expressed that the Beijing municipal government will do their best to support the development of PKU. He said that it is the responsibility of Beijing to help PKU to become a world-level university. He also pointed out that the PKU scientific projects on display have agreed with the development direction of capital industrial structure, and had good market prospects. He required the related departments to communicate with PKU as soon as possible to promote these achievements’ industrializations. For the independent innovation projects, he hoped the related departments could provide some support. Then, he stressed that the Beijing municipal government has aimed at building a world-level city and that independent innovation is one of the key aspects. Thus, the universities play important roles in scientific innovation. The government will support the universities to construct platform for technological achievements transformation to achieve the industrialization.

Prof. Min Weifang and Prof. Zhou Qifeng all expressed in their speeches that in order to make contribution for the national strategy and capital construction, PKU will always aim at the forefront of world science and technology, and continue transforming scientific achievements obtained from independent innovation into useful products.
