“Focus on Africa“ starts at PKU

Peking University, Oct. 26, 2012: “Focus on Africa”, one of the activities of PKU 9th International Cultural Festival series, started on Oct 21.

 

This activity aims at making use of the special resourceof the universities, enhancing the comprehension and communication between Africa and China, strengthening friendship among young generations, and constructing positive atmosphere for further interaction.

 

On the opening ceremony, Prof. Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU and the organizer Mr. Wang Gangyi, chief editor of Beijing Review delivered the addresses. Scholars and representatives from different organizations emphasized the significance of the activity.

 

On the opening day, the first Jurgen Schadeberg Exhibition “South Africa's Blacks and Whites’ Life in the 1950s” was held at PKU. The world-famous journalist Jurgen Schadeberg captured the important historical moments during the period of racial segregation in South Africa, which recorded the significant figures such as Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu, Yusuf Dadoo, Huddleston and so on.

 

“The Youth’s Role in the Africa-China Relationship” seminar was held later on. Representatives from PKU African Students Union, Beijing Review, and African scholars shared their interesting Africa-China stories.

 

As one important part of International Cultural Festival, “Focus on Africa” will last for one week. There will be African Movie Festival, lectures on African topics, and other colorful activities. The Fifth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation will held in Beijing at the same time, under this context,  PKU’s “ Focus on Africa” is more meaningful as its second stage and . Students in China shall know more about Africa through these activities.
