Intro:
Numerical solution of the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation in the high frequency regime is a challenging computational problem due to the indefiniteness of the operator and the large size of the discrete system. In this talk, we introduce the sweeping preconditioners for the rapid solution of the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation. The novelties of this new class of preconditioners are a specific order of eliminating the unknowns and efficient representations of the Schur complement matrices. For a problem with N unknowns, these preconditioners take essentially O(N) steps to apply, give iteration numbers that are independent of the frequency, andprovide a linear-complexity method for solving the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation. Intro:
Transition metal clusters are a unique class of chemical substances. Not only do they have well-defined molecular structures, they also exhibit interesting and potentially useful properties that are inherent to metal-metal bonded species. To be presented are highlights of our research in developing synthetic methodologies necessary to bring a cluster system out of the limited sphere of fundamental cluster chemistry and into general synthetic applicability.1 Specifically, the design and synthesis, structural characterization, and synthetic uses of judiciously chosen cluster complexes of the [Re6(m3-Se)8]2+ core (see figure) will be discussed. Key findings in three areas of research will be detailed. In the first area, we explore the uses of site-differentiated cluster complexes as stereospecific building blocks for supramolecular construction.2 A great variety of cluster-supported molecular and supramolecular architectures have been realized, some of which display rather interesting electronic and spectroscopic properties. In the second area, we pursue the activation of small-molecule ligands (MeCN, CO) by the Lewis acidic cluster core and subsequent chemical transformations, with an eye on developing novel catalytic schemes.3-7 Along a third and distinct direction of research, we develop cluster-containing functional materials, for light-emitting or optical limiting applications.8,9 Together, these results mark the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new chapter in cluster chemistry and materials.

Intro:
Inference under inequality constraints on parameter space is a challenging problem for the empirical likelihood. Little progress has been made since EL Barmi (1996)’s work on this topic due to difficulties in optimization and analysis of asymptotic distribution. In this talk, using an approach different to that of EL Barmi (1996), we give empirical likelihood ratio test statistics and their asymptotic distributions for testing problems on one sample mean, two sample mean, linear combination of coefficients of one and two sample regression models under various inequality constraints.
