May 24, 2010

Peking University, Beijing, May 24, 2010: On May 20, the opening ceremony of the first “Post MOU Youth across the Straits Cooperation and Development Forum” was held in Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center in Peking University. PKU Executive Vice President Lin Jianhua addressed the opening of the forum. Vice Chairman of PKU Council Prof. Zhan Yan directed the ceremony.

The forum is intended to build up a platform for policy-makers, academic elites, professional leaders and promising youth across the Straits to communicate and establish regular informal conversations on the key issues in business cooperation and also to provide opportunities for the promising students to learn, communicate and express their ideas. Students majoring in finance from ten top universities in mainland and Taiwan joined in the two-day forum.

President of the Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese and Director of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait Chen Yunlin, vice-chairman of the National Youth Federation Lu Yongzheng, the vice-director of National Council for Social Security Fund and the manager of China Investment Corporation Gao Xiqing, chairman of the GreTai Securities Market and the former head of Financial Supervisory Committee Chen Shu presented the meeting as invited guests.

PKU Executive Vice President Lin Jianhua said that youth from Taiwan and mainland are keen on the economic cooperation across the Straits. He hoped the students could benefit from the two-day exchange experiences, learn about the economic conditions of both sides, build up good relations and promote prosperity and well-being of people across Straits.

Vice-chairman of the National Youth Federation Lu Yongzheng pointed out that with increased cooperation, young men are eager to know the personnel requirements of the other side to better plan their career. Lu spoke highly of the forum as a great chance to exchange information. He also encouraged the youth to have a dream and pursue it firmly.

After the ceremony, Chen Shu delivered the opening speech on “New requirements for Personnel Training in Security Industry across the Straits in Post-MOU Time.” He pointed out that Taiwan’s stock market is undergoing the process of internalization and liberalization and the capital market in mainland will have completed the transition from an “emerging + transitory” to a mature market. If the finance and security industry on both sides of the Straits can establish a flexible, low-cost and efficient capital market in response to the regional competition, the economy of both sides would prosper. Chen encouraged the young men to hold fast to their dreams and make concrete effort to achieve them. He also advised taking advantage of the rich experience of marketing and management in the mainland and Taiwan to seek the best position for security industry in the global market.

During the forum, undergraduates and the elites in industry and academic will have conversations centered on “The Cooperation and development of youth across the Straits- from the perspective of the entrepreneur”, “The cooperation and development of security industry across the Straits from the perspective of the entrepreneur”. The students are going to give oral defense on their thesis.

In November 2009, the Memorandum Of Understanding, MOU was signed in Beijing and Taipei, which was the foundation for financial regulation institutions across the Straits to create the cooperative mechanism. It was a milestone in developing finance cooperation. MOU has strengthened people’s expectation and confidence towards Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA). In the post-MOU age, youth across the Straits need more in-depth communications to exchange information and further the knowledge of each other. That is the aim of the forum.
