Department of Arabic Language and Culture
The Department of Arabic Language and Culture, formerly the program of Arabic language and culture of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures, which was set up in 1946, is the first subject of its kind established in China. Since its establishment, the department has turned out a large number of language talents and accumulated very rich experiences in teaching and research. Now the department has a faculty body of 2 full professors, 7 associate professors, 1 lecturer and 2 assistant teachers. It offers a variety of tertiary education programs with BA, MA and Ph.D. degrees. The department is mainly engaged in teaching and research of Arabic language, culture and in the study of Arab-Islamic Culture.As one of the working languages in the United Nations, Arabic is popularly used in over 20 countries and regions in the Western Asia and Northern Africa, where the splendid Arab-Islamic culture was once created in ancient times and has imposed profound influence on the development of the world civilization. At present, China has developed a steady friendly relationship with many Arabian countries in all aspects with an ever-broadening prospect.
The length of undergraduate program at the department is four years, during which time students are expected to lay a solid foundation in basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Moreover, the students are required to fulfil compulsory courses such as English, Chinese, Philosophy, and computer. They also need to take selective courses such as natural science and art. Meanwhile, they are required to take many specialized subjects set by their own department, for instance, Arabian Literature, Arabian History and Culture and the Current Condition of the Arabian World.
