Peking University, Mar 17, 2011: On March 12, 2011, 40 alumni of Peking University (PKU) planted nearly 100 trees on the Qutang Pass at the beginning of the Three Gorges along the Yangtze River, calling on PKU alumni all over the world to donate for a “PKU Alumni Forest” there to add more green to the Yangtze River.

Funded by a continual donation of PKU alumni worldwide, the “PKU Alumni Forest” program sited along the Yangtze River in Chongqing, China, is expected to comprise trees of various species up to 1,000 mu (around 66.7 hectares) in three to five years. With the help of Chongqing Municipal Government, the total investment is up to 10 million Yuan.

The program will make amendment to the deteriorating environment of the Yangtze River. After the recent years of damages made by improper human activities, natural disasters are frequenting the Yangtze River, making the eco-balance there more and more fragile. With the trees planted, the soil and water will be better conserved.
