Closer ties between National Natural Science Foundation and PKU

Peking University, May 22, 2013: A National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) delegation visited Peking University (PKU/Beida) on May 17.


Led by NSFC President Yang Wei, the delegation visited the PKU Biodynamic Optical Imaging Center and had discussions with university administrators and experts from natural sciences departments.


Among those who accompanied the guests was Wang Jie, Yang’s former deputy who was appointed PKU vice president for audit and informatization affairs on May 8.

Professor Wang ’82, MS ’85, PhD ’91, served head of the PKU School of Mathematical Sciences and then of the Organization Department before taking up the NSFC post in 2000. The 57-year-old mathematician reassumed the role of university leader after 13 years.


PKU Council Chairman Zhu Shanlu welcomed the delegation, saying that for a long time the NSFC has supported PKU a lot in innovative development of relevant departments, promotion of research, talent introduction, and core team building.

The meeting


Chairman Zhu expressed his hope that the foundation could "guide the university in scientific research and give further valuable advice on its development during the PKU process of building a world-class university."


PKU President Wang Enge briefed the delegation on the scientific research and disciplinary construction at PKU, stressing that the next five years would be a key period to the university regarding its basic disciplinary construction and talent recruitment.


“Meanwhile, the overall framework of academic disciplines at Peking University will be more rationalized, and a leap of development in new disciplines will be promoted,” said President Wang.


“In the next period, Peking University will seize the opportunity in order to advance the disciplines’ quality, we hope that the NSFC can continue supporting us,” he added.
