The Average Research Level of PKU Female Arts Teachers Has Been Greatly Raised

PekingUniversity, Beijing, Mar. 2, 2009: In recent three years, the average research level of Peking University (PKU) female arts teachers has been greatly raised through the follow-up study which was started in 2001 by Office of Humanities & Social Sciences of PKU under the support of the school and the relevant departments.

To some extent, the number of the research projects which a teacher is in charge of can reflect the social recognition to the teacher’s research ability. From 2001 to 2004, there is 0.5 research project per capita being established by female arts teachers. For male teachers, there is one project per capita. So the number of the research projects established by male teachers is two times more than that of female teachers. In contrast, there is 0.78 research project per capita on average being established by female arts teachers from 2005 to 2007, and 1.49 per capita for male teachers.  From the data we know that the number of the research projects established by male teachers is 1.9 times more than that of female teachers.

The research funds can reflect the scale of scientific research. From 2001 to 2004, the average research fund per capita is 41.9 thousand yuan for female teachers, but 97.6 thousand yuan for male teachers. So the male teachers’ research funds are 2.33 time more that of female teachers.  However, the average research fund per capita is 82.5 thousand yuan for female teachers, but 185.5 thousand yuan for male teachers from 2005 to 2007. This time, the male teachers’ research funds are 2.24 times more that of female teachers which has reduced compared with before.

Considering the different research characters of different disciplines, they also check the research funds situation of these twenty arts departments respectively. From 2001 to 2004, there are three departments whose female teachers’ average research funds have exceeded the male teachers’, but this number has increased to five from 2005 to 2007 which has shown an increasing trend. From the view of the paper number, there are three departments whose female teachers’ papers are more than male teachers’ from 2001 to 2007. Comparing the number of the monograph, there are three departments whose female teachers’ average number of the monograph per capita have exceeded the male teachers’ from 2001 to 2004. From 2005 to 2007, the number of this kind of departments has reached to five.

The research level has directly related to the status of the titles. The latest statistical data has shown that there are 403 female arts teachers in PKU since December, 2008, and 20.3 percent of them are professors (about 82 persons). In contrast, there are 803 male teachers and 373 of them are professors (about 46.5%).
